Instead of a more traditional apple dessert, or one with delicious bite-sized chunks sprinkled throughout, we took thinly sliced apple and sandwiched it between two sheets of perfectly spiced dough, full of brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Not only that, but we put caramel sauce over the apples and over the cake to tie everything together and lock in the moisture – this stuff is too yummy!

INGREDIENTS :

Cake :

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar, optional

Filling :

  • 2-3 apples, thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups caramel sauce, homemade or store-bought, divided
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS :

  1. Preheat oven to 350º F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. For the cake, whisk together flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. In a large bowl or mixer, beat together vegetable oil and sugars for 4-5 minutes, or until fluffy and lightened in color.
  4. Beat in eggs and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in dry ingredients.
  5. Pour half of cake batter into greased baking dish, then spread apples in an even layer on top of batter.
  6. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top of apples, then pour 3/4 cup caramel sauce over apples.

  8. Top apple layer with remaining cake batter, then drizzle remaining caramel sauce on top.
  9. Place in oven and bake for 45-55 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean of crumbs.
  10. Remove from oven and let cool at least 15-20 minutes, then top with powdered sugar before serving.
  11. Slice, serve and enjoy.
