This applesauce cake recipe was used to make our wedding cake. That was 43 years ago. I think this was from my Aunt Edith Holden. She and my Aunt Adah Morgan were the ones who helped with our cake. This recipe has been in our family a long time.
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1/3 cup shortening (Crisco)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 egg
- 1 cup applesauce
- 1 cup raisins
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- Your favorite cream cheese frosting
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves.
- In a separate mixing bowl cream shortening, sugar, eggs and vanilla.
- Mix in applesauce
- Add flour in a couple of batches, mixing after each batch.
- Mix in raisins and chopped nuts.
- Lightly grease a square baking pan.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and bake at 350 for 35- 40 min or until done.
- Cool
- Frost with your favorite cream cheese frosting.
