This recipe came from my sweet mother-in-law, Velda Stowell. She has made this cake for as long as I have known her. It was not Thanksgiving unless she made this cake. It is one of Kyle’s favorites and he makes it a couple of times a year himself. You can’t make this cake and not think of Grandma Stowell.

Ingredients
- 1 cup chopped dates
- 1 1/4 cup hot water
- 1 1/2 cup sugar
- 2/3 cup Crisco shortening
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1teaspoon baking cocoa
- 1 1/4 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 1/4 cup sugar
Instructions
- Add the chopped dates to the hot water and set aside.
- Cream the sugar and shortening, add the eggs one at a time mixing after each addition.
- Add the flour, soda, salt and cocoa mix until well blended.
- Add the date mixture and 3/4 cup chocolate chips and 1/2 cup chopped nuts.
- Mix
- Pour mixture into a greased 9 x 13 baking pan
- Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips and chopped nuts on top of batter and sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar on top of the nuts.
- Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.
